Who runs the NFL?
09-10-2014

The media is making us dumber.

And we are letting them.

Everyone from big media outlets like CNN, Fox, and ESPN to your D-list wannabes on Twitter, have been broadcasting "their take" on Ray Rice, Roger Goodell, domestic violence, etc. for the past couple days. They want your support, your clicks, your approval, your eyeballs to their advertisers, your "Follow," your "Like," your attention.

The questions and commentary to come out of this unfortunate situation, so far, are pointless. It might as well be Charlie Brown's "mwah wah wah wah" teacher talking....

Domestic violence is bad.
Did Roger Goodell's office receive the tape?
If not, why didn't they dig it up?
Did Goodell see it?
Did someone prevent him from watching it so he had plausible deniability?

All ridiculously obvious bullet points or simply engaging in he said/he said about the video. *yawn*

Breaking: Deadspin reports that Congress is now getting involved! Can't make this stuff up.

Exploring, penalizing, and bringing awareness to domestic violence is not a waste of time. But everything else in this 'case' is.

Why?

Because you're not going to do a darn thing about any of it. Just admit it, like I did. I would keep watching football even I had no clue who the commissioner was. No one I've seen except Olbermann has called for a boycott, despite all their big, bad opinions. And that is the only way you're going to affect change ... gotta hit 'em in the pocketbook.

Otherwise, why on earth would Goodell resign from his $44 million/year position? Until his presence is costing the owners/league money, he will remain. The NFL has proven to be made of Teflon throughout its existence. I don't even know if I can do justice to the list of scandal-y type things that have happened: steroids, concussions, Aaron Hernandez, memory loss/dimentia, DUIs (some with manslaughter), dog fighting, Ray Lewis, unhelmeted head-stomping, racist/offensive team nicknames, drunk Joe Namath, "a molly," and now the topic du jour, domestic violence.

Wanna see something shitty? Wikipedia even has a page dedicated to NFL players who have committed suicide.

NFL Network dug into USA Today's "NFL Arrests Database" and reported this morning 85 domestic violence instances since 2000. Yet today, after approximately 83 of those had come and gone, Terry O'Neill, the president of the National Organization of Women, finally called for Roger Goodell to resign. Was she cool with the first 83? Just another opportunist looking to advance her cause over this high-profile issue?

I'm all for jokes. I'm all for enjoying sports. But what I hate are click-whores (Oh Jason Whitlock, you have a take on this??? I'm so surprised!! And sooooo not reading it!) and any media member who has their head on a swivel looking for any opportunity to get all pious. Settle down; these are easy issues to hit out of the park. You don't like men who knock women unconscious? Me neither. You don't like liars? Yep, I'm still right there with ya! Funny, we're two for two.

Except you, Stephen A. You're the epitome of "energy over substance." You wanna just open your mouth and see what falls out to fill time on a 24-hour news network? Usually, that's fine. If what's coming out of your mouth is about something as benign as sports. But what happens when your moronic, loud, unfiltered blubbering is about a real issue? Well, sit in the corner and take some time to think about that. Maybe next time you'll know when you're in over your head. Well, no, actually I'm sure you won't. Just remember not to "venture beyond the scope of your discussion" - presumably anything outside of sports, even though that is sketchy for you to begin with.

So, for those of you who cares to do anything about any of the issues you don't like in the NFL? Then here's where to hit 'em:

Revenue Sources, courtesy of Forbes.

A more detailed break-down, with figures, from some source I've never heard of.

I can summarize. We, the fans, fund the NFL. Tickets + concessions, merch, and buying things from their sponsors. Simple. If you don't like what the game is doing, organize a boycott of those things from which they derive their income. For good measure, here is a list of stadiums so you can boycott those sponsor the league by paying enormous naming rights.

Again, Olbermann is the only one I've heard propose a boycott, and that was just specific to the Ravens. Either boycott or expect to have 100s of people try to grab your attention with Khrushchev-esque fist-pounding and shoe-banging headlines like, "Roger Goodell should resign!!" or "Roger Goodell and the NFL need to tell us the truth!" (a.k.a. "I'm a writer lacking any original thought, but I want to be famous anyway! Waaaa! Where's my bottle?!?" Heads ups. All will be accompanied by pics of Goodell with weird looks on his face like this:

Or, do what I do, admit that Hard Knocks isn't the true reality show. It's actually the NFL as a whole. And that includes most of the media personalities who cover it. Realize that the media is little more than high school - a rumor mill, a quest for attention, a place for talk but no action.

The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can stop pretending to be outraged.
